<body lang=EN-GB style='tab-interval:36.0pt'> <div class=Section1> <p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>Sixteen people are feared dead and many more injured following an explosion today at Davao International Airport in the southern Philippines.</p> <p class=MsoNormal style='mso-margin-top-alt:auto;mso-margin-bottom-alt:auto'>A Davao Airport spokeswoman says that a bomb is believed to have been detonated around 10 metres outside the terminal building. <BODY LINK="#0000ff" VLINK="#800080"> <P>Philippine officials are confident the new Davao International Airport will draw flights by additional airlines when it opens in 2002.</P> <P>Airside works are set for completion by July, with terminal and other buildings on course to be ready by the first quarter of 2002. Operations should commence by the second quarter of 2002 at the latest, says assistant project manager Joey Saddam.</P> <P>Currently only local carriers and Indonesia's Bouraq Airlines and Singapore's SilkAir fly to Davao's existing airport, adjacent to the site of the new facility. Other airlines are put off, as the current airport is not a Category 1 international airport.
