    <P><STRONG>Varig starts new life</STRONG></P> <P>Volo do Brasil, a consortium of US investment fund Matlin Patterson and Brazilian partners, purchased the assets of Varig for $24m. Varig has been operating with 13 aircraft, down from 58 at the end of 2005, and 120 two years ago. <BR>Volo, the parent company of VarigLog, was the only bidder in an auction for the assets that included routes, slots and the aircraft fleet. As part of the deal, it is expected to inject $485m into the carrier to restructure and repay some of the airline’s more than $3bn debt. The Brazilian government formed a new unit to integrate the operating assets, with another new company – unrelated to Volo – assuming the remaining debt.<BR>And, in a blow to lessors, US Bankruptcy Judge Robert Drain has extended until 14 September a preliminary injunction that blocks leasing companies from seizing their aircraft for non-payment. <BR>After purchasing the airline, the new owners then temporarily suspended all operations
