The Royal International Air Tattoo 2010

Celebrations for the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will dominate this years' Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) as the Royal Air Force (RAF) stages its commemoration of the Battle and, how fitting, considering RIAT is the world’s largest military aviation show.

Dogfights, a flypast and a 'missing man' formation of aircraft are among the routines planned to mark the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

Historic Hurricanes, Spitfires and Messerschmitts, will join modern aircraft for an aerial display and RIAT’s website promises: “A flypast of modern aircraft representing many of the nations that took part in the historic conflict will form the centrepiece of tributes in the air whilst on the ground, a Battle of Britain airfield will be recreated, bringing to life the atmosphere during Britain's 'finest hour'.”

There will also be a Battle of Britain Village where re-enactors recreate the sights and sounds of England in 1940, complete with a static display of historic aircraft, military vehicles and period entertainment.

Air Tattoo Chief executive Tim Prince said it was important that the 'international' aspect of the Battle of Britain was not overlooked."Many people believe the Battle of Britain was fought simply between people from two nations - Great Britain and Germany - but pilots and aircrew from 17 nations took part in total. We believe the bravery and sacrifice of all those who took part should be recognised."

Modern aircraft making an appearance include the A400M with Airbus's chief military test pilot Ed Strongman at the controls as it performs its UK debut ahead of the Farnborough Air Show.

Also at the show this year will be an RAF Eurofighter Typhoon, a US Navy F/A-18 Super Hornet, a US Air Force F-22 Raptor, Romanian Air Force MiG-21s, Polish Air Force Su-22s and Saab Gripens.

Older aircraft at the show include two of the eight-engined B-52 bombers from their bases in Louisiana and North Dakota. One will be parked at the static display while the other will take part in the daily flying displays.

The iconic Avro Vulcan will be present following the win of a last minute battle to ensure the aircraft’s airworthiness specifically for the show.

RIAT takes place at RAF Fairford, Gloucestershire, UK on 17-18th July 2010.
