Airline Profile: Air Koryo
The state airline of the Korean Democratic People's Republic (North Korea). Operates passenger services linking the North Korean capital Pyongyang with Beijing and Shenyang in China and Vladivostok in the Russian Far East. Occasional domestic and international charter flights are also flown, the latter including Moscow, Tokyo and other points in Asia and Africa. Air Koryo is responsible, on behalf of the state for all civilian aviation in the country, including the operation of all airports.
Formed as Chosonminhang Korean Airways (CAAK) through the nationalisation of SOKAO, the joint Soviet-North Korean airline established in 1950. Adopted the Air Koryo identity during 1993/94. Introduced a scheduled service to Macau in 1996 and joined IATA later that year. The Shenyang route was opened in 2000. A scheduled service to Khabarovsk was withdrawn in 2005. Other routes discontinued in recent years include Bangkok and Macau. The airline was included on the lists of carriers banned by the EU as issued in March 2006, March 2007 and July 2007.
