Airline Profile: Continental Airlines
Continental Airlines is one of the world's largest airlines with more than 3,000 daily departures throughout the Americas, Europe and Asia, serving over 150 domestic and 120 international destinations from its major hubs in Newark, Houston, Cleveland and Guam.
An additional 400 destinations are served via Skyteam alliance partners and feeder services provided by regional carriers including Cape Air, Colgan Air, CommutAir, Expressjet. RegionsAir under the "Continental Connection" banner.
History
Continental Airlines Inc began operations in 1934 as Varney Speed Lines, taking its present name in 1937. Texas Air, parent company of Texas International Airlines acquired a controlling interest in Continental and the two were amalgamated on 31st October 1982 and to operate under the Continental banner.
In September 1983, Continental filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, the airline returning to normal operations in 1986.
The operations of People Express and New York Air were merged into Continental and the airline again filed for bankruptcy protection under Chapter 11, re-emerging in May 1993.
