    <P>A quick glance at a map of the area surrounding Agusta&shy;Westland's Yeovil factory in the southwest of England shows the airframer's deep links to the town. Streets called Sea King Road, Merlin Road and Gazelle Road pay homage to the then-&shy;Westland's past successes. </P> <P>But in October 2011, the Anglo-Italian airframer was busy responding to decimated defence budgets by cutting some 375 posts from the Yeovil plant. </P> <P>Some saw this as the beginning of the end for a factory that has been producing helicopters since the late 1940s, as AgustaWestland tried to maintain jobs in Italy, home of parent company Finmeccanica. It also confirmed the fears of those who saw Finmeccanica's acquisition of GKN's 50% stake in the company in 2004 as detrimental to British manufacturing.</P> <P>However, fast-forward a year and AgustaWestland is pledging more than £50 million to the factory - with the UK government chipping in a further £46 million, the third largest award under its Reghttp://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/IN-FOCUS-AgustaWestland-brings-civil-rotorcraft-to-UK-factory-as-military-options-dry-up-378358/

    <P>Rolls-Royce helicopter engines president Ken Roberts today confirmed to Flightglobal that the company’s RTM322 turboshaft engine is the “engine of record” for a new Eurocopter programme dubbed “X3”. </P> <P>“The RTM 322 was selected to power the Eurocopter X3 high speed technology demonstrator,” Roberts revealed at a Rolls press conference at the <A href="http://www.flightglobal.com/landingpage/heli-expo.aspx">Helicopter&nbsp;Association International’s Heli-Expo trade show</A> in Anaheim, California on 22 February.</P> <P>Built in a joint venture with Turbomeca, the RTM 322 is an engine option on the NH90 and EH101 and is used on the UK’s Apache helicopter fleet, which recently surpassed 100,000h of engine run time. </P> <P>Asked about the X3, Eurocopter officials denied any knowledge of the programme however, as did the company’s most likely competitor in advanced technology high-speed helicopters, Sikorksy.</P> <P>A recent patent application filed by Eurocopter shows a confihttp://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/HELI-EXPO-2009-Rolls-Royce-confirms-role-in-Eurocopter-X3-programme-322909/
