Aircraft Profile: Gulfstream G550

The 19 - seat Gulfstream G550 entered service 2003 as a more aerodynamically efficient version of its GVSP. Within a week, the ultra long range business jet had completed a 20,000 mile flight around the world – setting four city-pair speed records in the process. That tradition has continued with the G550 clocking up records between cities and continents across the globe.

Powered by two 15,390lb (68.4kN) Rolls-Royce BR710 engines, the G550 can fly eight passengers and four crewmembers 12,500km (6,750nm) - it will fly non-stop from New York to Tokyo in 14.5h at altitudes up to 51,000ft (15,545m).

The aircraft rolled out in June 2002 and clinched US certification in August the following year.

The Gulfstream G550 also features as standard the Plainview cockpit and the Gulfstream Enhanced Vision System - designed to enable flight crews to see runway markings, taxiways, adjacent roads and surrounding areas in conditions of limited visibility. The aircraft is also offered with a Synthetic Vision system as an option.

The G550 was the winner of the prestigious Collier Trophy in 2003 in recognition of its ability to outreach any other business-jets in its class.

The G550 is used by the US Air Force and US Navy under the designation of the C-37A.
