Airline Profile: Japan Airlines

Japan’s largest international carrier and lead carrier in the JAL Group, Japan Airlines International operates a network connecting over sixty domestic destinations and to over 150 destinations in 33 countries throughout Asia, Europe and the Americas. Other JAL group airlines are Hokaido Air Systems, JAL Express, JALways, Japan Air Commuter, Japan Asia Airways, Japan Transocean Air, J-Air and Ryukyo Air Commuter.


History

Formed as a private company. Reorganised in 1953 with the share capital equally divided between the Japanese Government and private investors. The airline returned to private ownership on 18 November 1987, when the government sold off its 34.5 per cent stake.


On 12 November 2001, Japan Airlines and Japan Air System reached agreement on the integration of the two carriers through the incorporated holding company, Japan Airlines Group. Japan Air System had been established on 15 April 1964 as Japan Domestic Airlines (JDA) through the merger of three feeder airlines Nitto Airlines, Fuji Airlines and North Japan Airlines.

On 1 April 2004, Japan Airlines rebranded as Japan Airlines International Co., Ltd.


In February 2006 Japan Airlines signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to join the Oneworld Alliance in 2007. Japan Airlines Domestic merged into Japan Airlines International on 1 October 2006. JAL duly became a member of the Oneworld alliance on 1 April 2007.


Japan Asia Airways merged into Japan Airlines International on 1 April 2008.
