  • Pictures: Finnish air force F-18s land safely after mid-air collision losing canopy and tail tips


    <P><BR>Photographs have emerged of the damage done to two Finnish air force McDonnell Douglas F-18C/D Hornets that collided in mid-air last month.<BR><BR>The two fighters collided during a training flight on 4 May at 09:55. During the collision, one Hornet lost a wing tip, the other had its canopy sheared off (pictured below). Despite the damage suffered, both aircraft landed safely at Karelia air command in eastern Finland at around 10:15.&nbsp;<BR><BR>No personnel were injured during the incident and&nbsp;no pilots ejected.&nbsp;</P> <P>An investigation has been launched by Karelia air command, where the Hornets are based. <BR><BR>In March the&nbsp;Finnish air force set up a review of its&nbsp;F-18 training procedures for conducting arrested landing following an October 2005 accident, during which a pilot missed an arresting cable and overshot the runway, resulting in aircraft damage totalling €200,000 ($240,000). <BR><BR> <TABLE borderColor=#000000 cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 widt

    <P><STRONG>Alitalia has €170m in short-term funding: board</STRONG><BR><BR>Italian flag-carrier <A href="http://corporate.alitalia.com/en/Images/COMUNICATO%208-4-08%20ING_tcm7-27231.pdf">Alitalia&nbsp;has around €170 million ($267 million) in short-term funding available</A> but its board reiterates that it needs a large injection of capital in order to remain in business.</P> <P>The board has welcomed yesterday’s statement from Air France-KLM, a statement which did not rule out the possibility of restarting discussions on an Alitalia takeover – discussions which collapsed last week when unions failed to support the plan.</P> <P>Alitalia’s board met today to consider the impact of Air France-KLM’s withdrawal from the talks and to examine the loss-making Italian carrier’s assets and liabilities in order to assess prospects for continuity.</P> <P>It says that the&nbsp;airline has around €170 million in financial credit available, which will enable it to keep operating for a short perhttp://www.flightglobal.com/news/articles/Alitalia-has-170m-in-short-term-funding-board-222867/

But the aerospace parts of the business remain strong, he tells Helen Massey-Beresford.</STRONG><BR></P> <P><STRONG>Q How have your feelings about the Sagem/Snecma merger changed since the last Paris Air Show in 2005?</STRONG><BR>At the last Paris air show, we were Safran for the first time, just after the merger. At this time, we were very pleased and confident about the future. Later on we ran into some significant difficulties, mostly outside aerospace and defence – telecoms had some very significant problems. We have faced these difficulties and taken measures to improve our position. We have never pretended that the idea of the merger was to put together engines and mobile phones.
