Aircraft profile: NH Industries NH90

The NH90 is a medium sized twin engine helicopter manufactured by NH Industries and is available in two variants, the Tactical Transport Helicopter (TTH) and the NATO Frigate Helicopter (NFH).

In 1992, a design-and-development contract was signed with the NATO Helicopter Management Agency, representing the four participating nations - France, Germany, Italy, and the Netherlands. THe NH90 was initially intended to be manufactured at three main facilities in Italy by AgustaWestland, and France and Germany for Eurocopter, however, following orders by Nordic nations and Australia stipulating local production, manufacturing facillities were set up in Finalnd and Australia.

Initially beset by technical and funding problems in the early 1990s, a large production order for 298 helicopters was launched in June 2000 by the partner countries and was soon followed by further orders from Europe and Asia/Australia, to date, 15 nations have ordered the NH90.

Powered by either twin Rolls-Royce Turbomeca RTM322-01/9 turboshaft or General Electric T700-T6E turboshaft engines, the NH90 can carry up to 20 troops at cruise speeds of up to 165 kts (305 km/h) and has a range of 430nm (800km).
