Rescue teams have yet to locate any survivors from a Transaven Let L-410 which crashed off the coast of Venezuela two days ago, as reports suggest the aircraft suffered engine failure.
The Venezuelan-operated aircraft had 14 on board when it disappeared while en route to the capital Caracas from the Los Roques islands on 4 January.
While no-one could immediately be reached at the airline, a Venezuelan civil protection agency source says five helicopters and several naval vessels are searching for the aircraft some 30km south of Los Roques.
The islands lie about 150km north of Caracas and the Venezuelan coast. So far the search has proven unsuccessful.
Sources at Caracas Airport identify the twin-engined L-410 as bearing registration YV-2081. Eight of those on board were Italian citizens.
Local reports cite an emergency management official as saying that the pilot reported engine failure and declared an emergency.
Transaven is a small turboprop operator which specialises in linking Caracas with tourist islands in the southern Caribbean region.
