United Aircraft affiliate AeroKompozit has started building a production facility to manufacture composite materials and aerostructures at the Aviastar plant in Ulyanovsk.
It is designed to manufacture airframe sections, wing spars and panels for the Irkut MS-21 twinjet and other domestic aircraft programmes, said AeroKompozit director Anatoly Gaidansky during the ground-breaking ceremony.
He added: "The facility will have cutting-edge technology providing for fully-integrated operations from moulding and extruding to performing geometric controls and painting of finished products."
United Aircraft chief Mikhail Pogosyan said its strategy envisages developing AeroKompozit into one of its centres of competence, complete with a dedicated research arm, design bureau, logistics and manufacture of ancillary tools.
The Ulyanovsk-based plant is scheduled to become operational next year and reach an annual production capacity of up to 100 sets of composite aerostructures in 2017.
