Argentina's state-owned flag carrier, Aerolineas Argentinas, is to launch a new route from Buenos Aires to Salvador de Bahia in northeastern Brazil.

A company source says the weekly connection, operated by Boeing 737-700 aircraft, will begin on 3 January and mark Aerolineas' first incursion into the region.

The source says that the service is "already almost sold out", presenting the possibility that Aerolineas could add a second weekly frequency.

"Brazil is a key market for us," the source says, citing an annual growth rate of more than 30% in Aerolineas' traffic to the country.
