Afghanistan's Safi Airways is to open a new connection to Abu Dhabi later this month.

Safi Airways will provide a direct link between Abu Dhabi and the Afghan capital Kabul from 14 May.

The route has been disclosed by Abu Dhabi Airports Company (ADAC) at the Arabian Travel Market in Dubai.

Safi will operate Boeing 737-300 aircraft twice-weekly on the service. President Tilmann Gabriel says: "We are convinced that growing demand will enable us to increase our frequencies in the future."

The carrier - which also has Boeing 767-200ER aircraft - already operates from Kabul to Dubai, Sharjah and Kuwait, and operates a number of domestic routes within Afghanistan.

ADAC vice-president of airline marketing Mohammed Al Bulooki says the carrier will be "perfectly placed" to serve the United Arab Emirates' Afghan community.
