Germany's Air Berlin Group has signed up to fit modified 'sharklet' wing-tips to Airbus A320 and A321 twinjets still on order with the airframer.
The agreement will cover 14 aircraft, the airline states, and the first will be delivered to its Austrian operator Niki.
Sharklet tips are undergoing flight tests on the A320 family and Airbus aims to offer the modification as an option from the end of this year.
Air Berlin Group will start receiving the jets from spring 2013. The company says the wing-tips will contribute to a programme to cut fuel consumption. This programme aims to reduce fuel burn to 3.4 litres per 100 passenger-kilometres this year.
