Air Berlin has named Wolfgang Prock-Schauer as its new chief executive, with immediate effect, replacing Hartmut Mehdorn.

Prock-Schauer, the former chief of BMI, had been holding the post of chief strategy and planning officer.

Air Berlin says he will take over the chief executive role from 7 January.

It adds that Mehdorn, who has been heading the airline as interim chief since September 2011, will step down from this position "by mutual agreement" with the board.

Prock-Schauer had also formerly served as the head of Indian carrier Jet Airways.
