Air Berlin is to close its bases at Dortmund and Erfurt airports from 1 November 2012 in response to the "disproportionate burden" imposed by Germany's aviation tax which has hit passenger demand.

The move will also help the carrier increase the utilisation of its crew and maintenance resources and achieve a better fleet structure as part of its "Shape & Size" restructuring programme, it said.

The 43 staff members employed at Dortmund and 33 in Erfurt will be offered jobs at other locations, it said.

Air Berlin has one aircraft stationed at Dortmund.
