Air China is to launch a direct service from Chengdu to Tokyo's Narita Airport from 22 September 2010.

The service will be operated twice-weekly, says the carrier, which does not say which type of aircraft it plans to operate on the route.

"The launch of this direct route will help improve the Japanese tourism market, the development of Sichuan's tourism industry, and even the economic and cultural exchange of the entire Southwestern region," says the airline.

Air China has three other indirect services from Chengdu to Japan. These are the daily Chengdu-Beijing-Tokyo and Chengdu-Shanghai-Nagoya services, and three-times weekly Chengdu-Dalian-Osaka service.
