Air France has abandoned plans to open a fourth regional base in Bordeaux because the market is too small says its chief executive.

When announcing its regional base initiative in 2011 to cut costs and boost its European medium-haul services, Air France said it intended to open bases in Bordeaux, Marseille, Nice and Toulouse.

While the latter three provincial operations have since opened, Air France chief executive Alexandre de Juniac, speaking to Flightglobal Pro at an Air France-KLM first half results press conference in Paris today, says there is now no chance of a similar base being created in Bordeaux.

With a number of newly opened routes from the three regional bases having already closed, he says Air France's regional base strategy is "highly reactive", adding "we'll quickly close [routes] if they don't work".
