Air France will make a decision on the future of its regional bases in September this year amid claims that the initiative was significantly loss-making in 2012.

The SkyTeam carrier's bases in Marseille, which opened in October 2011, and Nice and Toulouse, which opened in April 2012, will continue to be unprofitable, albeit at a lower level, in 2013, according to an article in a French newspaper.

Air France said it was not prepared to comment on the figures, nor on the allegation made by La Tribune that seat occupancy on the routes from the bases was below the airline's target of 64%.

In a press conference in Paris on 7 January, Air France chief executive Alexandre de Juniac said that the regional base programme has been a success despite underwhelming load factors.
