AirAsia post-tax profit inches up 4% in Q3

AirAsia has posted profit after tax of ringgit (M$) 158 million ($51.5 million) for the third quarter, up 4% against the same period in 2011.

The carrier's total revenue for the quarter to 30 September increased 14% to M$1.24 billion. The growth was attributed to a 9% increase in passenger numbers to 4.75 million, alongside growth in the number of aircraft operating out of Malaysia to 59.

Net operating profit increased 18% to M$205 million in Q3.

Thai AirAsia recorded revenue of baht (Bt) 4.43 billion in Q3, up 17% from the same period last year. This was attributed to 22% growth in passenger volume to 1.96 million. Seat load factor rose by 2 percentage points year-on-year to reach 82%, despite a 19% increase in capacity.

Indonesia AirAsia reported revenue of rupiah (Rp) 1.2 trillion, up 12% against Q3 2011. Passenger volume grew by 8%, while operating profit rose eightfold to Rp138 billion. Load factor remained steady at 78%.

Year to date, AirAsia posted profit after tax of M$1.53 billion for the first nine months, marking a 356% increase against the same period last year.

Total revenue for the nine-month period rose 12% to M$3.59 billion, while net operating profit also increased 7% to M$504 million.
