AirAsia X intends to grow its fleet to 32 aircraft by 2016, through a mixed strategy of leasing and purchasing aircraft to meet its route development plan.

The low-cost long-haul carrier operates a fleet of nine Airbus A330-300s and has two Airbus A340-300s subleased to other operators until end 2012.

In a prospectus issued on the Securities Commission Malaysia website last week, the carrier detailed its aircraft delivery schedule.

It expects to receive seven A330s each in 2013 and 2014, five in 2015, four in 2016 and one in 2017. In 2018, it will start receiving the 10 Airbus A350-900s it has on order.

"We expect that we will fly only A330-300s and A350-900s going forward," it adds.

AirAsia X, however, says that it will review fleet plans regularly and could be open to more aircraft types to respond to changes in the market place.
