Malaysian long-haul, low-cost carrier AirAsia X reported a 12.4% year-on-year growth in passenger traffic as measured in RPKs in the first quarter of 2012.

Capacity, as measured in ASKs, increased by 5.5%, while actual passenger numbers grew by 7.5% to 690,000. Load factor for the three months to 31 March stood at 87%, up by 6 percentage points from the previous year.

On the cargo front, AirAsia X carried 7,410t of freight, down by 11% year on year. The carrier said that cargo operations were affected by the discontinuation of Indian routes.

However, as a result of strong improvement in yields, cargo revenue recorded double-digit growth in the first quarter of 2012 compared with the same period last year, adds AirAsia X.
