Fierce competition in the short haul market has seen airlines slash the quality of their seating over the last few years in a bid to drive down costs. But British design firm Design Q is aiming to add a touch of luxury to economy class cabins with its new Close Couple slim seat that draws from car industry design concepts to provide a comfortable journey for passengers.

The ultra light product can be placed at a 71cm (28in) pitch, which has the equivalent leg room of a standard economy seat set at a 79cm (31in) pitch.  To create more space, the fixed back seat has contoured cushions and minimal head restraint.

The covers can be replaced quickly in service and the entire product has far fewer parts, affording a large weight reduction. Design Q has also used Elmolite to cover the seat, a new flameproof lightweight leather from Swedish firm Elmoleather, which weighs in at 680gsm.
