Airline representatives are urging that a temporary exemption from the Emissions Trading System be extended to intra-EU flights.

On 16 April, the European Parliament voted to support a "stop the clock" proposal that applies to intercontinental flights. The European Regions Airline Association (ERA) and International Air Carrier Association (IACA) are now calling for the moratorium to be broadened to encompass all flights departing from or arriving at an EU airport.

In a joint statement, the associations argue that in its current form the moratorium "clearly creates discrimination", noting that "airlines will be financially impacted at different degrees depending on the proportion of the EU versus non-EU flights they operate".
