Airservices Australia and two partners have signed an agreement to create a new green air traffic management (ATM) programme covering the Indian Ocean region.

The Indian Ocean Strategic Partnership to Reduce Emissions (Inspire) is the second environmental ATM initiative to be spearheaded by Airservices Australia.

The first - Asia and South Pacific Initiative to Reduce Emissions (Aspire) - was formed in February 2008 and last month launched daily flights implementing the fuel-saving techniques developed under the programme.

Inspire is a collaboration between Airservices Australia, Airports Authority of India and Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) of South Africa.

It aims to develop and implement procedures to reduce emissions during all phases of flight across the Indian Ocean and surrounding region. The three partners say they "welcome participation from other key stakeholders" as the programme progresses.

Inspire was developed to address the strong and continuing growth in air traffic in the areas over the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean.
