Australian air navigation services provider Airservices has commissioned a new radar at Mount Hardgrave on North Stradbroke Island.

The radar will provide primary and secondary radar surveillance of aircraft operating around Brisbane airport. The earlier version was only a secondary surveillance radar.

The upgrade is part of a multi-million dollar modernisation program undertaken by Airservices.

Furthermore, the new radar is housed inside a dome to protect it from weather events that occur around North Stradbroke Island.

Airservices says that the new radar will enable work to commence on modernisation of the existing radar located at Brisbane airport, which will act as a back-up to the Mount Hardgrave radar and also allow for additional surveillance coverage within the airport terminal area.
