Airservices Australia has commissioned a new Australian dollar (A$) 5.5 million ($5.78 million) terminal area radar at Cairns airport.

The project is a part of A$90 million modernisation programme that is being carried out by Airservices to ensure the safe and efficient movement of air traffic in Australian airspace.

The new equipment has an improved solid state primary radar with a 60nm (111km) range. In addition, it includes a Mode S capable monopulse secondary surveillance radar with a range of up to 256nm.

The new permanent radar is housed in a dome to protect it from high winds and other harsh weather conditions. The dome will allow the radar to continue functioning in high winds and lengthen the life expectancy of the equipment.

With the completion of the five-month radar upgrade, the buildings and equipment used at the temporary radar site at Machans Beach will be removed.
