Russian titanium specialist VSMPO-Avisma and US aluminium major Alcoa are to join forces in an effort to meet soaring demand from aircraft manufacturers for high-end materials and semi-finished parts.
Alcoa and VSMPO-Avisma's parent Rostec have signed a memorandum of understanding to embark on joint production of advanced titanium and aluminium alloys in Russia.
Rostec says the venture will initially manufacture large stampings, such as airframe structural elements, wing fasteners and landing gear struts.
To this end, the partners intend to open, in 2016, a forge-and-press workshop at Alcoa's Samara plant.
They have not yet determined their stakes in the new enterprise.
