Italian carrier Alitalia and India's Jet Airways have agreed a memorandum of understanding to codeshare on flights starting in the winter season of 2010, subject to government approval.

Jet Airways will operate daily direct codeshared services from Milan to New Delhi starting 5 December.

Under the agreement, Jet Airways could place its '9W' code on selected Alitalia-operated flights and in turn Alitalia could place its 'AZ' code on some Jet Airways services, including flights between Italy and India, subject to government approvals.

The cooperation agreement between the two airlines will cover frequent flyer programme partnerships, ground activities and cargo services.

Roberto Colaninno, Alitalia's chairman says: "The MOU with Jet Airways is a further step in Alitalia's strategy of growing on the global marketplace, and follows the key agreements that Alitalia already signed with Aeroflot, Etihad and Vietnam Airlines."
