Alitalia on 26 March began operation of on a new twice-daily service between Milan Linate and London City airport using an Embraer 190 aircraft.
It expects to carry 50,000 passengers on the route this year and is considering adding an additional daily service, it says.
The carrier flies the route using 100-seat E-190s configured in a two-class layout. It has a total of four of the type in its fleet with a further aircraft due for delivery in 2012, according to Flightglobal's Ascend Online database.
The route was previously served by Air France subsidiary City Jet through a wet-lease contract.
