Alitalia chief executive Rocco Sabelli is expected to step down and a new chief executive will likely be named by March or April.

A source familiar with the situation said that Sabelli is expected to quit at the end of his three-year mandate, with a successor to be appointed at a shareholder meeting in either March or April.

Alitalia last month announced that it had tentatively agreed to merge with fellow Italian carriers Blue Panorama and Wind Jet.
