Italian flag carrier Alitalia has sold the last six of its out-of-service Boeing MD-82s.

The fleet of Pratt & Whitney JT8D-217C-powered twinjets have been in storage for some time and have been gradually sold off, with three previously acquired by Venezuala's Aeropostal.

Alitalia says that Sarasota, Florida-based trader Engage Aviation has bought the remaining six examples.

The deal comes after Engage Aviation had agreed in 2012 to buy three other aircraft.

All of the ageing narrowbodies are to be transferred to the buyer within the next six months.
