Italian flag-carrier Alitalia is to participate in the transatlantic SkyTeam joint venture governed by Air France-KLM and Delta Air Lines.
Firm details on when the carrier's operations will be integrated have yet to be disclosed.
But a spokesman for Alitalia confirms that it will become part of the venture which was originally unveiled by Air France and Delta in 2007.
Alitalia had already been lined up as a future member but could not immediately participate because of Italian airline was undergoing restructuring.
The transatlantic alliance enables the carriers to co-operate more closely on services between Europe and North America.
Oneworld members are seeking regulatory approval for a similar tie-up while Star Alliance has a transatlantic venture known as 'A++'.
