Allegiant Air has reconfigured 47 Boeing MD-80s with an additional 16 seats each, nearing completion of the project that it first announced more than two years ago.

The Las Vegas-based carrier says in an earnings call today that it had completed the work on 47 of 51 planned aircraft as of 30 January.

Allegiant first announced in September 2010 that it will add 16 seats to the aircraft, taking the total number of seats on board each aircraft to 166.

The airline had initially hoped to finish the project by end-2012 but said in 2012 that it was behind schedule as it acknowledged facing some challenges.

According to Allegiant's fleet plan for 2013, it aims to complete the project on the remaining aircraft by the first quarter.
