Low-cost carrier Allegiant Air's pilots have voted to be represented by the International Brotherhood of Teamsters (IBT).

The 350 pilots in the bargaining unit chose to join Teamsters Local 1224 in Wilmington, Ohio after a vote authorised by the National Mediation Board following an application from the union.

"Allegiant respects the right of the pilot group to elect third-party representation, and we will work with the IBT to the best interests of both our employees and the Company," says Maurice Gallagher, Allegiant chief executive and chairman. "Contract negotiations can be a lengthy process and we do not anticipate any disruptions to our business or operations."

Teamsters Local 1224 already represents flight crews employed by ABX Air, Atlas Air, Cape Air, Silver Airways and other carriers.
