Latin American and Caribbean Air Transport Association (ALTA) executive director Alex de Gunten will leave the organisation in August.

De Gunten is leaving ALTA to pursue other "professional ventures" focused on the airline industry, the airline body says in a letter. He served as executive director for 10 years.

ALTA has engaged executive search firm Spence Stuart to find a new executive director and intends for them to be in place by August. De Gunten will assist with the transition in an advisory role.

During de Gunten's tenure, he actively worked to improve safety in the region including the adoption of IOSA safety standards by ALTA member airlines, and oversaw a 400% increase in the organisation's membership.
