American Airlines and Air Tahiti Nui have filed an application for a bilateral codeshare with the US Department of Transportation.

American would place its AA code on Air Tahiti's nine-weekly flights between Los Angeles and Papeete under the agreement. Air Tahiti would place its TN code on American flights from LAX to more than 15 destinations, including Boston, Chicago-O'Hare, Dallas-Fort Worth, Las Vegas, Miami, New York's John F Kennedy airport, San Francisco, Washington-Dulles and Washington-Reagan National.

The codeshare will complement the airlines' existing reciprocal frequent flier partnership.

Air Tahiti also has a frequent flier partnership with Delta Air Lines.

The Papeete-based carrier announced an expanded codeshare with Qantas Airways to Australian carriers flights between Brisbane and Melbourne, and Auckland, New Zealand, where passengers can connect to Air Tahiti's flights to Papeete yesterday.

Air Tahiti is evaluating membership in either the Oneworld or SkyTeam global alliance.
