American Airlines is the customer behind ILFC's order for 15 Airbus A321s that are on lease to a single carrier, sources familiar with the agreement indicate.

The lessor disclosed the order in a regulatory filing issued last week. Airbus's order backlog shows ILFC signed for 15 A321s on 19 July.

American ordered 130 A320-family aircraft in 2011, split between the A319 and A321.

The US carrier has agreed to lease the aircraft, which will be delivered through to 2017, from Airbus. Those leases will be sold by Airbus to third parties.

The carrier will take delivery of 65 A319s with CFM International CFM56-5B engines and 65 A321s with International Aero Engines V2500-A5s.

Flightglobal Pro previously reported that Airbus has sold down 30 of the American aircraft to date and is in conversations with additional lessors and funds regarding additional aircraft.

Beginning in 2017, American will start taking delivery of an additional 130 A320neo-family aircraft as part of its order for 260 Airbuses placed in July 2011.

ILFC says an airline has not been identified with this agreement. American could not immediately be reached for comment.
