American Airlines’ first flight operated by its new premium Airbus A321 Transcontinental took to the skies today.
American flight 118 departed Los Angeles International airport at 07:22 local time and is scheduled to arrive at New York JFK International around 14:56 local time, according to FlightAware.
The first JFK to Los Angeles flight on the aircraft is American flight 133 scheduled to depart at 15:35 local time.
The 102-passenger A321T is outfitted with 10 lie-flat first class seats, 20 lie-flat business class seats and 72 economy seats, which represents a reduction in the number of seats by about 40% per aircraft from the 168-passenger Boeing 767-200ERs that they replace.
The A321T will operate exclusively between JFK and both Los Angeles and San Francisco International, with the schedule fully converted to the new aircraft by June.
American competes with comparable premium products offered by Delta Air Lines, United Airlines and Virgin America on the two routes. JetBlue Airways plans to introduce its own premium product, dubbed Mint, in the market in June.
