American Airlines has requested that the deadline for it to file a reorganisation plan with the bankruptcy court be pushed to 28 January 2013.

The Fort Worth-based airline says that the delay is needed to complete its reorganisation plan, in a recent filing with the US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York. Issues include the complexity of its business, on-going negotiations with its labour unions as well as work with the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corporation,

The exclusivity period for American to file a reorganisation plan is scheduled to end on 28 December, after the bankruptcy court judge approved a similar request for a delay in July.

American filed for chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in November 2011.
