American Airlines parent AMR has requested an extension to its deadline to file a restructuring plan with the bankruptcy court to 1 April.

If approved, the new date would extend the exclusive period for the Fort Worth-based carrier to file its preferred plan with the court by 20 days, according to a US Bankruptcy Court for the Southern District of New York filing on 11 January.

AMR is evaluating a possible merger with US Airways.

The deadline for the airline to file a restructuring plan with the court is 11 March, which has been extended four times since it filed for chapter 11 protection in November 2011.
