American Airlines and China's Hainan Airlines have agreed to codeshare and allow their frequent flyer members to earn miles on each other's flights.

Under the agreement, American will place its code on Hainan's domestic flights from Beijing and on flights between Beijing and Seattle.

In return, Hainan will place its code on American's domestic US flights beyond Seattle and on American's flights between Shanghai and Chicago/Los Angeles and between Beijing and Chicago.

"By strengthening and broadening our presence in China through our relationship with Hainan Airlines, American will be better positioned to deliver enhanced benefits to our joint customers," said Virasb Vahidi, American's chief commercial officer.

The deal is subject to government approval, said American.
