American Airlines says it has "recently exercised" two additional options for Boeing 777-300ER aircraft, bringing the US carrier's total order to five.

The airline announced the move in its first quarter 2011 earnings report, adding that the five new 777s which provide "increased efficiency due to better seat mile economics and performance characteristics" and will be delivered in 2012 and 2013.

American placed an initial order in January for two 777-300ERs to support the airline's international growth and exercised an option for a third in February.
