Forty-four occupants were on board an Antonov An-24 involved in a landing accident at the Ukrainian city of Donetsk.

The aircraft, operated by South Airlines, had been conducting flight 8971, an internal service from Odessa.

Donetsk's airport operator states that the twin-engined aircraft was transporting 36 passengers and eight crew members.

It describes the event as an "emergency landing" and that those on board are receiving medical attention, without clarifying details.

There are, however, initial reports of fatalities.

Meteorological data from Donetsk indicates that the airport has been experiencing fog and low-visibility conditions. The airport operator says an inquiry will be formed to look into the accident.
