All Nippon Airways (ANA) has confirmed that it is in talks with Myanmar carrier Asian Wings Airways regarding a possible investment, and that an announcement can be expected later today.

Local media reports surfaced on 27 August saying that ANA is looking to buy a 49% stake in Asian Wings.

This deal could be ANA's first foreign strategic investment, after the ANA Group announced plans to make strategic investments in aviation-related businesses in Asia over the next three years in April.

Asian Wings, which started operations in January 2011, is a privately-owned domestic carrier based at Yangon International airport. It operates scheduled services using its fleet of three ATR 72-500s and a single Airbus A321, linking its Yangon base to various parts of the country. On its website, the carrier also states plans to start services to regional destinations.

ANA operates three weekly services to Yangon.

In July, it was disclosed that ANA was in discussion with San Miguel Corporation regarding a possible partnership stake in flag carrier Philippine Airlines.
