Armenian flag carrier Armavia has declared bankruptcy today after running into problems repaying its debt.

The privately-owned carrier based in Yerevan, the country's capital, was not able to pay debt that it had owed to Yerevan International airport, say reports.

Armavia could not be immediately contacted for comment.

The carrier operated a fleet of seven aircraft, comprising three Boeing 737-500s, one Bombardier CRJ100 and two CRJ200s, Flightglobal's Ascend Online database shows.

It had operated flights to Europe and the Middle East from Yerevan.
