Passenger aircraft flying into and out of the Tasmanian airports, Hobart and Launceston, will be under "24 hour" air traffic control from today.

Airservices Australia has put in place new deals requiring its air traffic control centre in Melbourne to monitor and control the airspace over both the airports when their towers are not operational, said Australia's transport minister Anthony Albanese.

These enhanced air traffic control services build on the introduction of advanced air traffic control surveillance technology, known as wide area multilateration, which was commissioned in Tasmania in June 2010, he added.
