Australia's Qantas Airways has applied to launch flights between Australia and Papua New Guinea from July.

It is looking to start twelve weekly flights between Cairns and Port Moresby, using QantasLink's 74-seat Bombardier Dash Q400s, says the Australian government's International Air Services Commission.

Qantas is seeking an allocation of 888 seats per week on the route, it adds.

Papua New Guinea's Air Niugini and Airlines of Papua New Guinea operate on the Cairns-Port Moresby route, says Innovata.

Pacific Blue, a subsidiary of Virgin Blue, is the only carrier operating between Australia and Papua New Guinea, with flights between Brisbane and Port Moresby.
