Star Alliance carrier Austrian Airlines has become the latest to charge a fee to secure a reservation in the emergency exit row of its aircraft.

The exit row is more spacious and Austrian is charging a €70 ($92) premium to obtain the seats while booking over the Internet. Booking acceptance will depend on passengers' meeting certain physical criteria, for safety reasons.

"Customers can easily book this increase in personal comfort by using their credit card," says the carrier, which is already reconfiguring its short-haul fleet with slimmer seats.
